The capital of Perigord Noir, Sarlat is a very well preserved town. Over 1,000 years of architecture are still alive in the alleys, flat-stoned roofs and walls of warm, golden coloured stone. Sarlat became a town in the 8th century. On the border between the French and English Kings during the One Hundred Years War, it became English in 1360 and was liberated ten years later by Du Guesclin. The Saint-Sacerdos cathedral was erected under Henri IV. In the 18th century, Sarlat lay dormant for 150 years before returning to prosperity with the arrival of the railway. The high number of listed or classified buildings per square metre makes Sarlat the leading European town in terms of heritage. It has often served as a natural setting for many films.
